Chinese farmers' painting was born in farming villages in 1958 when Mao Zedong
started the great leap forward. The paintings were propaganda paintings to glorify
farming and promote harvest at the time, and most of them were painted on public
walls in villages. But in the 70ies due to many artists being sent to villages, the
painting technique of the farmers improved. With time the artists had more
Freedom to choose their topics and style. The themes of the paintings changed
from propaganda to representation of daily life. They started using their experience
from papercuts, embroidery, dyeing, mask-painting, and shadowgraph to improve
their paintings. They created simple, natural, bright and lively paintings. Their
imagination and vivid colors attract the viewer. This special style of paintings
originated from Chinese culture itself.
